LPG is a cleaner fuel and it allows appliances to work efficiently and quieter. LPG omits less greenhouse gas emissions than other alternative fuels.
As the dangers to the ozone are ever more apparent, it is important that we all do what we can to protect the environment. LPG is more environmentally friendly than other fuels as it is clean burning and virtually odourless. LPG is lead and sulphur free and so emits less greenhouse gas emissions than other alternative fuels. LPG is a very calorific product, and has a low carbon content that can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide.
See the table below, which compares carbon dioxide emissions from LPG compared with other fuels:
| Fuel | Kg Co2per unit /Kwh |
|---|---|
| LPG | 0.214 |
| Fuel Oil | 0.27 |
| Cooking Coal | 0.331 |
| Grid Electricity | 0.43 |
Up until recently customers were put off LPG due to the strict guidelines governing storage and maintenance standards. The new oil regulations came into force on 1st September 2005, so whether oil or LPG is installed, current guidelines now ensure regular maintenance and repairs to tanks to minimise spillage risks and prevent damage to the environment. Choosing a less environmentally damaging fuel for homes will help in the prevention of further damage to the atmosphere.
What is LPG?
Propane and butane are produced either by the separation of these products from crude oil or as a by-product of refinery operations. They both exist as gases at normal atmospheric pressure and temperatures, but they have the special property of becoming liquid at atmospheric temperature if moderately compressed, and reverting back to gases when the pressure is sufficiently reduced. As such this allows them to be easily transformed into a liquid, in which state they are roughly 250 times as dense as they are when gases, which can be easily transported and stored, and hence they are both collectively known as Liquefied Petroleum Gases or LPGs.
