Renewable Energy Government Initiatives

The UK Government has launched several incentives that are designed to encourage you to generate your own energy, decreasing your dependence on buying all of your energy from suppliers and helping you create greener energy.

Under some schemes you can even sell back any extra green energy you generate. Whether you’re a commercial business or a self-builder you can benefit from Government incentives such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHi) and the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT). There is also a Non-Domestic RHi tariff available for commercial properties and developments.

Both the RHi and FiT are clean energy cashback schemes, where you get paid for every unit of energy (kWh) you produce from a renewable technology.

Feed-In-Tarriff (FiT)

Although a Government Initiative the payments for the electricity you generate will be made by your electricity supplier. This is called a ‘Feed-in Tariff’ (FIT).

The amount you will be paid for every unit (kilowatt hour or kWh) of electricity you generate will depend on the following:

  • the size of your system
  • what technology you install
  • when your technology was installed
  • who put the technology in place – it must be a certified installer

In addition to this you may also apply for ‘export tariffs’ which is where you can sell any extra units of electricity you generate but do not use back to your electricity supplier.

The Government initiatives are administered by Ofgem, in order to obtain detailed information and current tariff rates please visit the following Government websites:

Non-Domestic RHi

The Non-Domestic RHi scheme supports renewable heat installations in business, industry and the public sector and currently supports the following technologies:

  • biomass
  • heat pumps (ground source, water source and air source)
  • deep geothermal
  • solar thermal collectors
  • biomethane and biogas
  • combined heat and power (CHP) systems
