Customer case study: Folly Farm
Folly Farm offsets carbon emissions in latest ‘green drive’
Offsetting carbon emissions, the latest step in Folly Farm’s sustainability programme
Folly Farm, one of Wales’ most well-known farm and zoo attractions, is offsetting over 20 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year, an amount equivalent to driving over 167,000 miles.
The decision to become the first family attraction in the UK to take part in Flogas’ Carbon Offsetting Initiative, was taken as part of Folly Farm’s drive to reduce its impact on the environment, and support conservation programmes at home and abroad.
Spanning 120 acres, Folly Farm uses LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) from Flogas to power its cafes, eateries and food stalls, and heat buildings across the site, all of which produces unavoidable emissions. It is these emissions that are being offset through the Flogas Carbon Offsetting Initiative.
- 20 tonnes of carbon emissions offset per year
- Annual offset equivalent to driving 167,167 miles
We pride ourselves on our industry-leading green policies, which we’ve introduced throughout all areas of the business. As well as choosing LPG, as an efficient fuel source for our catering facilities, we’ve also invested heavily in the use of solar panels, biomass heating and low energy light bulbs in our funfair, to reduce our impact on the environment. Choosing to carbon offset is yet another step in reducing the impact the park has on the environment.Chris Ebsworth, Managing Director, Folly Farm
The way it works
Recently launched as part of its ‘2040 Vision’ – Flogas’ Carbon Offsetting Initiative allows businesses to offset the unavoidable carbon emissions created during day-to-day operations. It sees any emissions created, balanced by initiatives that remove an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere
For this to happen, Folly Farm purchases ‘carbon credits’ based on their energy use, which are put towards activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or absorb carbon dioxide around the world.
Supporting conservation at home and abroad
Examples of projects helped through the Flogas initiative include those that provide some of the poorest households in West Africa with access to eco-friendly cooking equipment, and others that supply clean hydroelectric power to the local grid in rural China.
One of the projects has even prevented more than 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere and has protected an area of nearly 750,000 hectares in Zimbabwe from deforestation.
Carbon offsetting has proved extremely popular with our customers since its launch and remains an important part in achieving our ‘2040 Vision’ –which is our endeavour to supply customers with 100% renewable energy solutions by 2040.David Taylor, Head of Corporate Affairs and Innovation, Flogas
Achieving sustainability targets
“The conservation work that the park undertakes is a huge achievement and we’re glad that Folly Farm has yet another green credential to add to its ever-growing list.
“Introducing Folly Farm to the benefits of our Carbon Offsetting Initiative is just another example of how we can help businesses to achieve their sustainability targets.
Chris Ebsworth concludes: “Having achieved a ‘Green Key’ award for three years running, conservation and improving the environment is at the heart of what we do. We had no hesitations when Flogas offered us the chance to offset our emissions.”
