Gas bottle safety
Our guide to gas bottle safety
Gas bottle safety
Your safety is our priority. This page shares simple, practical tips to help you store and use gas bottles safely. By following these steps, you’ll reduce risk and stay protected — every time you use gas.
What to do in an emergency
- Open all doors and windows to ventilate the property
- Do not turn on/off any electrical switches
- Extinguish all naked flames, do not smoke, strike matches or do anything which could cause ignition.
- If there are any electrical security entry phones/locks, please open doors manually.
How to handle gas bottles
Do not store gas bottles under BBQs to prevent fire hazards from hot fat.
Never store gas cylinders near potential fire or ignition sources such as e-bikes and other rechargeable devices.
Never store or use bottles in the horizontal position — leaks could be very serious and allow liquid to enter gas lines.
Never store or use gas bottles below ground level as gas can collect in low areas; storage should be well ventilated and preferably outdoors.
Always replace safety caps/plugs when the bottle is empty or not in use.
Do not drop bottles off vehicles or platforms — this can damage the bottles and valves.
Don’t change or store bottles near naked flames.
Do not use tools to operate bottle valves.
Trace leaks using liquid detergent solution, never a naked flame.
Check hoses regularly and ensure they are properly secured with hose clips.
Replace damaged or worn hoses with ones of the correct quality.
Always display safety and operating notices prominently.
Propane bottles should not be used indoors for domestic appliances due to their higher pressure.
